Brian Johnstone is a native Scotsman and graduate of the Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Scotland with a BA.(Architecture) 1967, and of Edinburgh College of art with a DA. (Edin.) in Fine Arts and Design 1976.
Concurrent with college work, Brian undertook a 5 year office apprenticeship in a Southern Scottish Architectural and Surveying practice, which provided Building Design and Drafting, Field Construction Supervision, and surveying experience in the real world.
Travel and experience of life and work in many cultures has resulted in an ever increasing sense of wonder, humor and gratitude for the personal enrichment gained from each unique project opportunity and experience, and a worldly perspective towards the Design and Construction professions which to the present day, considers each work undertaken to be a personal learning experience. He has practiced both Design and Field Construction Management worldwide, including two of the largest projects of their type in the world (in Indonesia and Colombia), and in several areas of the USA. Marriage to graphic designer Kate Johnstone, neé Burnett smitethepellet@nehalemtel.net in 1998 resulted in a mutual decision to settle in the North Oregon Coast area, specifically in Manzanita.
